Copyright 2006 Donna GunterWebsites of service companies seem to make some common website mistakes over and over again. Part of the function of your website is to establish a relationship with potential clients and get them into your marketing funnel. Previously, I listed the first 5 deadly website mistakes most often made by service business owners. Here are the last 5:6. Hidden prominent benefit or feature that makes your company unique. When I'm doing online research for a particular product or service, I want to know right away what makes any company unique or different from their competition. Several months ago I was speaking with the owner of a fencing company and was confused about why people would buy fencing online and have it shipped, as the shipping cost would negate any savings they might realize on the product over buying it locally. I learned this company offered free shipping on purchases of $2500. I replied, "That's great, but how would I know that?" The offer was buried in an internal page of the site. I encouraged the company to put the offer in a prominent place on the home page so that prospective clients would immediately know the unique feature of doing business with this company.7. Creation of a website that looks like every other business website in your industry. Sometimes I cringe when I go to the website of a web design company that serves a niche market, like dentists, for example. When I look at the company's website portfolio, every single website looks virtually the same, except for color variation or changing the graphic on the home page. Granted, if I'm seeking a dentist in Houston, there's little chance I would stumble across a dentist in Dallas with a similar website. However, what I frequently see business owners do is to scope out the websites of their competition and format their own site in a similar fashion, but with their own information. My online searches for a product or service often make me yawn because I see website after website that essentially says the same thing -- nothing stands out enough to rouse me out of my stupor. Don't fall victim to a cookie-cutter website -- make sure that your personality is prominently featured throughout your site. Give visitors a great experience of "you" when they visit. And, flagrantly flaunt your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) so that your visitor instantly realizes why they should do business with you instead of your competitor.8. Lack of additional resources. One of the ways I gauge the usefulness of a website is if they have incredibly useful resources to help me research and/or resolve my problem. I've bookmarked websites and subscribed to email newsletters solely on the strength of a website's resource page. One of the things that my clients love about working me with is that I have a mental Rolodex of resources -- they ask a question about doing business online, and 95% of the time I have a ready resource to give them that helps them solve their problem. A number of these resources are listed on my website or featured in my email newsletter. Many times, I receive no compensation for the resource I recommend -- I just know that it's the best source of which I'm aware to do a particular task. Your clients want the same capability from you -- the more you know about your industry and its problems and how to find solutions, whether you offer the solution or not, the greater the perception of your expertise, and consequently the greater value you offer your client.9. No testimonials or case studies to demonstrate how you've helped others solve problems. One of the easiest ways you can create customer confidence in you is to list testimonials on your website. Testimonials that simply say you're great and wonderful do little to establish your credibility. You need testimonials that clearly state how someone's life, business, career, etc. is different and improved after working with you. Those are the ones that make a difference to your visitor. Case studies outlining a problem and how your service helped solve it are also very powerful in convincing a potential client that you can do what you claim.10. Website that is "you" focused. There's a very funny country song sung by Toby Keith called, "I Wanna Talk About Me" in which the refrain, in part, says, "I wanna talk about me, Wanna talk about I, Wanna talk about number one , Oh my me my, What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I see..." Do you spend all of your website real estate talking about yourself and how wonderful you are? Your visitors need to know a bit about you, but what holds their interest is the knowledge that you understand their problems and issues and have ready-made solutions that resolve these problems. Make your website about your visitor, not about you.Your website can function as an attractive online brochure, or it can be a client-generating tool to help you grow your business. Businesses in almost every industry can benefit from a website, and the majority of those can critically evaluate their website again this checklist of mistakes so that they can increase their client prospects online.
Let’s say you have just met a wonderful person you want to date, through one of the many free dating sites on the Internet or maybe you met the person at the corner coffee shop. Everything is going great, until you find out…the person does not smoke, and you do. What should you do next? Is there happiness for smokers in what seems to be a non-smoking world? If you doubt that it is becoming more and more a non-smoking world, you have only to check the most recent statistics: 39% of US citizens, according to USA Today, live in areas that are covered by laws limiting smoking. At the beginning of 2006, eleven states had bans against smoking in all indoor public places. Consequently, dating and smoking have become a bit more complicated, but with creative thinking, and a little planning ahead, this does not need to be a headache in a smoker’s life.1. Be honest and up front about your smoking and about the fact that your date does or does not smoke. Attempts to deceive someone are generally not appreciated. Another reason to be honest is that a non-smoker’s sense of smell can be very sensitive; some can identify the smell of cigarette smoke in a person’s hair if that person has smoked even a single cigarette after bathing.2. Take some quiet time to reflect on how important smoking is as a part of your life; perhaps you are a committed smoker who has no intention of stopping or even cutting down, and you smoke as much as a pack or more a day. Or, you are someone who only smokes a few cigarettes a day and who is contemplating quitting completely. The reason it is important to know what type of smoker you are is to allow you to be honest with your date about your smoking. If you have not thought about it ahead of time, it can be tempting to say what you think someone else wants to hear. Being honest from the beginning can save you from possible arguments and disappointments farther down the road in your relationship.3. Know the areas where you live that allow indoor and outdoor smoking. If you live in an area that is very restrictive about smoking, you might want to go someplace exotic—drive or fly out of town for a short trip, to a place that is both entertaining and less restrictive with its smoking bans. Remember, smoking is a legal activity, and one that you as an adult have a right to do. It is a fact of life that some of us smoke, and some of us do not; we don’t need to make it good versus bad—we just need to use our creativity to make dating a little easier.4. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself, whether you are laughing at your habit of tapping the table as you talk over lunch, or flicking your cigarette in an ash tray every two minutes. Whatever you do, do not be afraid to see yourself as humorous. This is not just a tip so that we all laugh more, but if it were, that would be a good motive in itself. Laughter has been scientifically proven, according to the School of Medicine at Loma Linda University, to increase the immune system’s activity as well as to reduce stress hormones. When it comes to dating, we can all use more fun and less stress.5. Consider breath mints and other ways to take away that aroma smokers can exude. Breath has always been considered an important feature in dating, and we’ve all seen the commercials about popping in a breath mint or chewing gum. Fortunately, breath fresheners are now available as dissolvable strips—just place one on your tongue, and your mouth is alive with cool mint flavor, and the strip itself disappears. Be sure to offer the other person whatever breath enhancer you are using so this can be a time of sharing rather than just focusing on your breath.6. Up to now, we have talked about you and your date. Always remember, the person who is sought after and talked about in a positive way is usually one who makes the other people feel important, cared about, and listened to. In other words, even though we are talking about you as a smoker and tips for dating, the real tip for any new relationship is how you relate to the other person. What can you do to make that person feel cared about and listened to? That has little to do with your smoking or even the smell of your breath and everything to do with whether you are truly interested in what the other person has to say and share, and if you are able to express that interest in a way the other person can understand.7. Some matches just seem to be made in heaven, but we need to remember it is up to us whether we allow the relationship to continue to grow or not. In other words, you find yourself dating the same person more and more; those free dating sites that you once looked at have become a thing of the past for you, since you think maybe you have found the person of your dreams. If that is the case, and smoking is an issue, do not be afraid to confront it head on and deal with it openly. Since you have been honest from the start, and your date knows you are a caring person, the subject is one you as a couple can deal with successfully. The hint here is that while matches are made in heaven, some problems do not vanish unless we deal with them, creatively and constructively.8. Wait to smoke. If you have the self-control to wait and refrain from smoking before or during a date, do not be afraid to exercise that self-control, as long as it is a choice you feel comfortable with. Waiting to smoke says many things about you, all of which can be positive; you are a caring person, you are capable of controlling your habits, and you are aware that others may not appreciate you smoking. And it leaves more time open for enjoying mutual pleasures, like dancing and sailing for instance.9. I’m OK, you’re OK. What you are doing, although some people may not like it, is your choice. And you have a right to both your choices and their consequences. While you cannot demand that everyone likes the fact that you are smoker, you can expect those people who truly care about you to be able to deal with and discuss the issue in a gentle and considerate way. Again, it is very important to know how much smoking matters to you, and how much you are able to bend or change your smoking habits and still be just as happy as you were yesterday, before you met the new person in your life.10. Review all the steps that have been listed and see which ones work for you. A hint is not useful if it does not relate to you or your lifestyle. For instance, say you can’t stand the smell of breath mints, and you are not about to chew some strange sort of gum—tip 5 may be something you may need to modify. All of the hints given work for some people, and your task is to try them, and to use those you find comfortable. The idea is to make your dating more enjoyable. If you do you may not be searching those free dating sites anymore—who knows, you may be ready to read some “how to buy an engagement ring” sites.

Why is it that the Bill Gate's of this world are rich and famous? What secret do they know that the rest of us don't? If you study their lives closely, you'll discover the rich and famous have certain habits that attribute to their success. Successful people are very careful about how they spend their time. No matter how you slice it, we all have 24 hours in a day, so the key lies in learning to use our time wisely. Below are some ways you can dramatically increase your productivity through more effective use of your time.1. MONITOR HOW YOU CURRENTLY USE YOUR TIME: If it seems like your day slips by all too quickly, try creating a log of your daily activities. Once you see where you are spending your time, you can identify and focus on the activities that provide the greatest returns for you personally and financially. Start your log by writing down what time you wake up, get ready, and begin work. Calculate how much time you spend on individual activities such as email, phone calls, and client work.=> FREE TIME TRACKING TOOL: Here's a personal time survey to help you discover how much time you spend on various work activities: Personal Time Survey Tracker2. CALCULATE HOW MUCH YOUR TIME IS WORTH: Time is money. Knowing how much your time is actually worth can help you make better decisions as to whether you should perform a task or outsource it. For instance, if your time is worth $200 an hour, you are far better off paying someone $30 an hour to edit your newsletter. You can "bank" the other $170 per hour by spending your time on profit making activities. Also take the time to determine how much time a day you need to spend on billable activities to make your desired profit. I try to spend 1.5 hours a day on money making projects.=> FREE TIME COSTING TOOL: Here's a time costing worksheet to help you determine how much you are actually when you subtract the expenses. Time Costing Sheet3. CREATE A DAILY SCHEDULE: Don't start your day without a to do list. Make a list of tasks and categorize them into business building activities, client activities, and personal items. Then break bigger unmanageable projects into smaller "doable" chunks so they less intimidating and are easier to accomplish.=> FREE DAILY TO DO LIST: Try this free all inclusive WebMomz To Do List4. PRIORITIZE: Have more to do than hours in the day? By prioritizing your tasks, you'll make sure that you are tackling the items that matter most. Create a system that works for you. One standard way of prioritizing is to mark items with A, B, and C.Ask yourself these key questions:What items MUST be done today?Which items can be rescheduled? What can be delegated?Which tasks most closely match my priorities and goals?Which items can be eliminated?5. LEARN TO SAY NO: Are you adding one more item to your never-ending TO DO list? You are in control of your time. Be strong and uphold your personal boundaries. When you are well rested and treat yourself and your family to the time off you deserve, you'll feel happier and more productive when it's time to go back to work. **Before you say yes, ask yourself these questions:Do you really have the time or energy to do that extra task?Do I like this customer? Are they good for me?Will it be profitable?Does it invade on your personal time?Does it involve doing something you enjoy?Does it fit in with your list of priorities and goals?6. REMOVE DISTRACTIONS AND TIME SUCKS: Time sucks are lurking everywhere like viruses. Think about which activities are eating up your time. For me personally, these items include email, social calls, and telemarketers. I "conquer" the email demon by shutting down my Outlook when I am working. When a family member calls during work time, I politely ask if I can call them back during the afternoon and remind them of my work hours. Caller ID valiantly saves me from the "would be" telemarketer time thieves. With one glance, I can quickly differentiate telemarketers from important client calls.7. STICK TO THE PLAN: Try not to get sidetracked from your plan. One of my friends has a motto, "A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency for me". It's a smart one to live by. Unless it's a true emergency, or you are being paid "rush" time, you probably don't need to squeeze a last minute request in today. Also, by assigning yourself project deadlines, you can keep on top of projects and avoid those dreaded last minute emergencies.8. CHOOSE AN INSPIRING PLACE AND TIME: We are all "built" differently. Do the tasks which take your most "brain power" when you are at your prime. Are you a morning person or do you work best burning the midnight oils? Create an ultimate work haven that is clean, distraction free, and inspiring. My office overlooks my flower garden and is right in the heart of family activity. As I glance to the right, our Angel fish "Spike" proudly parades across the fish tank. In front of me, Monet has a glorious display of peach poppies in a field. Above me, Monet is painting a vivid portrait of his flower garden. In the living room, my son is softly singing the Spiderman theme to himself - music to my ears!9. BUNDLE LIKE TASKS TOGETHER: As you work through your daily list, try to chunk your tasks into like activities. By creating a separate "chunk" of time for answering email, invoicing, making return phone calls, you'll save time and mental energy.10. AVOID INTERRUPTIONS: Trying to do the same thing over and over again with interruptions can be maddening. Once you start a task, try to finish it to the end. If something comes up that you need to remember or do, unless it's urgent, simply add it to your list and continue on with your current project.11. BE ORGANIZED: When things are tidy, it saves you time and frees you to focus on the task at hand. Digging through a pile of papers and finding a squished Twinkie isn't very conducive to the work experience. Follow your own organizational style. PHONE LISTS: For instance, I arrange my phone lists into groups according to how I use them: friends, family, doctors, my children's playmates, etc. I also list people in my phone book that I talk to on a first name basis by their first name alphabetically. For instance, I list my mom under "M" and my brother under "T" for Troy. "D" has a list of all my doctors. This works for me, because it's how I think.EMAILS: Another time saving idea is to color code your emails. In my personal color scheme I use one color for clients, one for newsletters, and another for my coworkers. You can also group your emails using categories and folders.ONE CALENDAR MEETS ALL: Keeping track of work appointments, Brownie meetings, and committee meetings can be very difficult. My secret to keeping on top of family and work appointments is to schedule them all on one calendar.DAYTIMER SPECIAL SECTION: Create a special section of your Daytimer just for special interests, hobbies, or kids. My husband keeps one with all his stock info. I have a special kid section with phone numbers for Brownie leaders, playmates, doctors, school contacts, bus number and other items.SUMMARY: Why wait for success when you can literally schedule it! By mastering your time, you can accomplish much more with less effort. Be choosey about how you spend your time. Focus on activities which most closely match your goals. By taking time to monitor, measure, and manage your time, you will enjoy an abundance of success and happiness.
